The following is a list of phrases that are commonly used in Castilian Spanish. (You will definitely impress your trainer if you can learn these before you leave!) Enjoy!

  • a lo mejor -- as luck may have it; like as not
  • a partir de -- from, starting . . .
  • a pesar de -- in spite of
  • a proposito -- on purpose, or by the way
  • a prueba de agua (fuego) -- waterproof, fireproof
  • al fin y al cabo -- at last, anyway, in the long run
  • al mas tardar -- at the very latest
  • al por mayor -- wholesale price
  • andarse por las ramas o los rodeos -- to beat around the bush
  • ascender a -- to be promoted to
  • así es la vida -- such is life
  • caerle a uno bien -- to suit one, to have a liking for
  • camino de -- on the way
  • carne de gallina -- goose bumps
  • carta de venta - bill of sale
  • echar la culpa a alguno -- to lay the blame on someone
  • compraremos comida en camino de la ca….
  • con detalle -- in detail
  • con razon -- no wonder
  • conforme -- agreed, I'm with you
  • conocer algo al dedillo -- to know something inside and out, perfectly, by heart
  • contar con -- to count on
  • correr riesgo -- to run a risk
  • cuanto antes -- as soon as possible
  • cuento contigo -- I'm counting on you
  • dar a alguno en -- to hit somebody in . . .
  • dar ánimo -- to cheer up
  • dar cuerda al reloj -- to wind a watch
  • dar en el clavo -- to hit the nail on the head
  • dar guerra -- to bother, to make trouble (said of kids)
  • dar marcha atras -- to go in reverse; back up
  • dar por supesto -- to assume, to take for granted
  • dar que hacer -- to make or cause extra work
  • dar razon -- to give information
  • darle a uno asco -- disgusting, sickening
  • darle a uno la gana -- to not want to
  • darse por vencido -- to give up
  • de antemano -- beforehand
  • de hoy en adelante -- from now on
  • de la noche a la manana -- overnight
  • de ninguna manera -- no way, by no means
  • de veras -- really?
  • de vez en cuando -- once in a while
  • dejar dicho -- to leave word
  • dejar mucho que desear -- to leave a lot to be desired
  • dejarse de cuentos -- to stop beating around the bush
  • despues de todo -- after all
  • digno de confianza -- reliable, trustworthy
  • dos hacen la mezcla -- the equivalent for "it takes two to tango"
  • echar a correr -- to run away
  • echar a fuera -- to be kicked out, thrown out
  • echar a perder -- to spoil, ruin, waste
  • echar de menos -- to miss someone or something
  • echar la llave -- to lock the door
  • echar una mano -- to give a hand, to help
  • echar una ojeada -- to take a quick look
  • echar una partida -- start a game (sports)
  • echar una siesta -- to take a nap
  • echarse atras -- to backout, to withdraw
  • el día menos pensado -- when you least expect it
  • el pro y el contra -- the pro and the con
  • el ratón se le comió la lengua -- the equivalent for "the cat has got your tongue"
  • el vuelve a luchar -- he's fighting again
  • ella te tomaba el pelo -- she was pulling your leg
  • en absoluto -- out of the question
  • en cambio -- on the other hand
  • en mi punto de vista -- in my point of view
  • en primer lugar (segundo etc) -- in the first place
  • en serio -- are you serious
  • era hora -- it was about time
  • esperar con placer -- to look forward to
  • estar a mano -- to have or to be on hand
  • estar de moda -- to be in fashion, in style
  • estar en buen uso -- to be in good condition
  • estar harto -- to be full, fed up with
  • estar mal -- to be ill, sick
  • estar mimado -- to be spoiled
  • estar o ir tirando -- to still be kicking (hanging in there)
  • estarse quieto -- to keep still
  • estarse tranquilo - to keep still
  • exceso de velocidad -- speeding
  • faltar a su palabra -- to not keep your word
  • faltarle a uno un tornio -- to have a screw loose, to be nuts
  • fijar la vista -- to stare at
  • fíjate -- imagine that, take note of that
  • formar parte de -- to be a member, part of
  • fuera de broma -- all kidding aside
  • ganar tiempo -- to save time
  • haber de -- to be expected to, or obliged to
  • hacer burlas -- to make fun of someone
  • hacer cola -- to stand in line
  • hacer destacar -- to put emphasis, to make stand out
  • hacer falta -- to need, to be necessary
  • hacer frente a -- to face up to, to confront
  • hacer gestos a -- to make faces at
  • hacer gracia -- to amuse, to make someone laugh
  • hacer juego -- to match, to go together (clothes)
  • hacer novillos -- to play hooky, skip class
  • hacer una cosa a medias - to do something halfway
  • hurgarse las narizes -- to pick ones nose
  • ir a medias - to go halves
  • ir a por todas -- go for it
  • ir al grano -- get to the point
  • ir de mal en peor -- to get worse and worse
  • ir del brazo -- to walk arm in arm
  • le queda bien la camisa -- the shirt looks good
  • levantar la mesa -- to clear the table
  • llamar la atencion -- to attract ones attention
  • llevar a cabo -- to carry out, to finish
  • llevar ventaja -- to have an advantage, to be ahead
  • llevarse bien -- to get along well with somebody
  • llover a cantaros -- to rain cats and dogs
  • lo presiento -- I feel it in my bones
  • lo unico valioso -- the only good thing
  • manos de mantequilla -- butter fingers
  • mas valiera -- better off
  • matar tiempo -- to kill time, to waste time
  • me da asco -- it makes me sick
  • meter la pata -- to make an embarrassing blunder
  • mi moda a ver -- my way of looking
  • mientras tanto o entre tanto -- meanwhile, in the meantime
  • mirar con fijeza -- to stare at
  • ni en suenos -- I wouldn't dream of it
  • ni hablar -- I don't want to talk about it
  • ni idea -- no idea, to not have the foggiest
  • ni mucho menos -- not even close
  • ni siquiera los perros rechazan a los suyos -- not even dogs reject their own
  • no cabe duda -- there is no doubt
  • no hay mas remedio -- there's no other recourse
  • no me da la gana -- I don't want to
  • no me digas -- you don't say, don't tell me
  • no poder tragarle a uno -- to not stand (stomach) someone
  • no tener precio -- to be priceless, invaluable
  • no vale ni un duro -- not worth a 'nickle'
  • no vale ni un pito -- not worth a darn
  • pagar a plazos -- to make payments
  • parecer mentira -- to appear to be impossible
  • pasado de moda -- out of date, out of style
  • pasar un buen rato -- to have a good time
  • pasarse sin -- to do without, get along without
  • poner a prueba -- to put to the test
  • poner el grito en el cielo -- to make a big fuss, hit the roof
  • poner en claro -- to clarify
  • poner en conocimiento -- to give notice
  • poner en duda -- to question, to doubt
  • poner en marcha -- to start up, to put in motion
  • poner la mesa -- to set the table
  • ponerse a -- to begin to
  • ponerse colorado -- to blush, go red in the face
  • por lo visto -- apparently, seemingly, evidently
  • por poco me caigo -- I almost fell down
  • por si acaso -- just in case
  • primero auxilios -- first-aid
  • puesta del sol -- sunset
  • punto de gracia -- funny side, sense of humor
  • qué aburrido -- how boring
  • qué barbaridad -- how awful, what atrocity
  • qué fastidio -- how frustrating
  • qué lástima -- what a pity
  • qué lío -- what a mess
  • qué mas da -- what does it matter? What difference does it make?
  • qué pena -- what a pity
  • qué tontería -- how stupid
  • qué va -- you've got to be kidding, nonsense
  • qué verguenza -- shame on you, or "how embarassing!"
  • que yo sepa -- as far as I know
  • quedar bien -- to be in good standing, to look well (in clothing)
  • quedar en hacer algo -- to agree to do something
  • resultar que -- it turns out that
  • saber algo al dedillo -- to know something inside and out, perfectly, by heart
  • sacarse a uno de quicio -- to exasperate someone
  • salida del sol -- sunrise
  • salio como era de esperar -- it turned out as was expected
  • salir con -- to have a date with somebody
  • salir ganando -- to win, to come out ahead
  • salirse con la suya -- to get your own way
  • salvo y sano -- safe and sound
  • se conoce que -- it is clear or evident, one knows
  • se puso a trabajar -- he began to work
  • ser bien recibido -- to be received well, to be accepted
  • ser de esperar -- as to be expected
  • servir para -- to be used for, to be useful for
  • sin fin -- endless, numberless
  • sin querer -- unintentionally, not on purpose
  • sobre todo -- especially, above all
  • solo me faltaba eso -- that's all I needed
  • sonarse -- to blow ones nose
  • te echo de menos -- I miss you
  • tener a mano -- to have or to be on hand
  • tener alergia -- to be allergic
  • tener celos -- to be jealous
  • tener comiezon -- to have an itch
  • tener cosquillas -- to be ticklish
  • tener enchufe -- to have a connection with somebody important
  • tener fama de -- to have a reputation of
  • tener la intencion de -- to intend to, to mean to do something
  • tener la palabra -- to have the floor
  • tener lugar -- to take place, to be held
  • tener presente -- to bear in mind
  • tener que ver con -- to have to do with
  • tener sus mas y sus menos -- good and bad points
  • tomar el gusto - to take a liking to
  • tomar el pelo -- to make fun of, to pull somebody's leg
  • tomar el sol -- to be sunbathing, taking in some rays
  • tomar en cuenta -- to take into account
  • tomar medidas -- to measure
  • tomar parte -- to take part
  • trabajar como loco -- to work like crazy
  • vaya -- what do you know?
  • velar por -- to take care of, to protect
  • volver a (verbo) -- to do again
  • volverse loco -- to go crazy
  • ya lo creo -- you bet, certainly
